On creating a holding space for online therapy

2 min read

Online psychological care has become a real and effective alternative for those seeking emotional support. Physical distance, once seen as an obstacle, proves permeable when genuine presence exists on both sides of the screen.

The space in which a therapist receives — even when virtual — carries the same symbolic function as a consulting room: it says something about who is doing the listening. An organised, quiet, well-lit environment communicates care. Not just about image — but about the other person.

A few practical considerations I find essential: a private space, free from interruption; soft lighting that causes no discomfort; materials close at hand — a notebook, a pen; and, if you like, a glass of water or a cup of tea. Small gestures that tell the patient: this encounter matters.

Online therapy reaches those who are far away — especially Brazilians living abroad, often without access to care in Portuguese or within a setting that understands the experience of immigration. Care crosses borders. Analytic work does too.
